|Red Cross Needs Volunteers In Marshall County|
LAWRENCEBURG, TN, April 8, 2013 — The Heart of Tennessee Chapter of the American Red Cross is looking for a few good men and women. The Red Cross needs local volunteers in Marshall County to assist with its mission to help communities prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters. The Red Cross is a volunteer-driven and volunteer-led organization.
“We rely on volunteers to help us respond to disasters around the clock, and around the block,” said Brian Toll, Emergency Services Director of the American Red Cross – Heart of Tennessee Chapter, which oversees services in eight counties in Southern-Middle Tennessee. “When somebody loses their home to a fire in the middle of the night, it’s our volunteers who go out to the scene to help that family. When a flood or a tornado happens, it’s our volunteers who work in the shelters and make sure people are fed and taken care of.”
Toll went on to say that too often, people only volunteer once a major disaster has occurred. But the Red Cross needs volunteers to be trained prior to a disaster in order to make the disaster response operation more efficient. He also said that the Red Cross responds to several smaller disasters year-round which people don’t often hear about, and that the Red Cross needs volunteers to help respond to those incidents, too.
