Marshall Medical Center Offers Tips To Avoid Heat-Related Illness
LEWISBURG, Tenn. – Marshall Medical Center wants you to know that while summer is the season for vacations and outdoor fun, it is also a time to be aware of heat-related illness and ways to prevent it. Here are some tips to do just that.
- Drink more (non-alcoholic) fluids and don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink. Avoid liquids with large amounts of sugar which will cause you to lose more body fluid and very cold drinks which will cause stomach cramps. (If your doctor generally limits your fluid intake or has you on water pills, ask him how much you should drink while the weather is hot.)
- Even a few hours in an air-conditioned place can help your body stay cooler when you go back in the heat. If your home is not air-conditioned, visit the local air-conditioned library, mall, shopping outlet or other public facility.
- Take a cool shower or bath.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
- Never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle.
- Check regularly on those more vulnerable to heat - infants and young children, the elderly, those who have a mental illness and those who are physically ill (especially those with heart disease or high blood pressure).
- If you must be out in the heat limit your activity to morning and evening hours and try to rest in shady areas.
- Watch closely for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, especially in infants, young children and older adults.
- Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses and by putting on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher.
