COLUMBIA, Tenn. — The Women’s Center at Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) was recently awarded a renewed three-year term of accreditation in mammography following a review by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
“I am pleased to announce that the Women’s Center has been granted this essential accreditation by the ACR,” said Dana Salters, administrative director of oncology at MRMC. “This accreditation assures the public that quality measures are in place at MRMC that make mammography safe, accurate and reliable.”
Mammography is a specific type of imaging test that uses a low-dose X-ray system to examine breasts. A mammography exam, called a mammogram, is used to aid in the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases in women.
The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities that meet ACR practice parameters and technical standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and expert medical physicists. Reviewers assess image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs before sharing their findings with the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which provides the practice with a comprehensive report that can be used for continuous practice improvement.
“The physicians and staff members in the Women’s Center provide our patients with outstanding care every day,” said Maury Regional Health CEO Alan Watson. “I am grateful for the entire team of physicians, technologists and navigators who made this possible. Their commitment to medical excellence and patient care is evident in this reaccreditation.”
The ACR, founded in 1924, is a professional medical society dedicated to serving patients and society by empowering radiology professionals to advance the practice, science and professions of radiological care. The college serves more than 37,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology as well as the delivery of comprehensive health care services.
In addition to its mammography services, the Women’s Center (located in the Pavilion on MRMC’s campus), which is also designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the ACR, provides an array of women’s health services, including breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and bone density studies. The Women’s Center also offers educational materials and programs on a variety of health topics and issues facing women today.
