NASHVILLE—With the recent focus on the interconnection between human and animal health, the Tennessee Department of Agriculture (TDA) is hosting a special event for media. On Aug. 17, 2022, TDA’s Animal Health Division will make sure the only thing poultry bring home from the Tennessee State Fair is a blue ribbon.
Keeping backyard birds continues to rise in popularity statewide for the food they provide and as pets. Most birds can be successfully maintained in a variety of environments. To ensure a safe environment, all birds participating in fairs should arrive healthy so they can return home healthy.
State Veterinarian Dr. Samantha Beaty and Animal Health Division technicians and veterinary staff will be at the Tennessee State Fair to examine and test poultry arriving for competition and exhibition. In addition to ensuring only healthy birds are allowed on site, this event aims to raise awareness of best practices for handling and biosecurity, the strongest defense against disease in a flock.
