One Wednesday, August 6th Lewisburg Police Department responded to an animal welfare check at 316 Jones Circle in Lewisburg with the assistance of animal control.
Upon arrival, officers contacted animal control who had stated he had received calls from the neighbors about the condition of the dogs on the property. They all appeared malnourished and thought that there might be a dead dog on the property. All the animals were in very poor condition and neighbors had been trying to feed the dogs.
Officers contacted residents Zelda Swaggerty, 40, and Curtis Davis, 49. Both stated the dogs had been fed and that the dead dog didn’t belong to them. Further investigation found that Mr. Davis had an active warrant and was transported to the Marshall County Jail.
Warrants were obtained for aggravated cruelty to animals. Mr. Davis received both warrants at the jail, while officers served Zelda Swaggerty at her residence. One child on the scene was taken into custody by a family member.
Both were arrested for aggravated cruelty to animals and given a court date of September 29th. They both received a $6,000 bond. A DCS referral was completed for the child.
