NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Department of Agriculture (TDA) announced it has received the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) 2025 Program Element Evaluation Reports for the state’s Plant Processing and Shipping program and Risk Assessment and Risk Management program.
The evaluations provide an annual assessment of Tennessee’s molluscan shellfish public health program, recognizing the state’s continued work to maintain compliance and address program improvements. Conducted by FDA’s Office of Microbiological Food Safety, Division of Seafood Safety, the report reflects ongoing collaboration between state and federal partners to ensure the safety of shellfish products such as mussels, oysters, clams, and scallops.
Tennessee’s shellfish program, administered by TDA’s Food and Dairy Section, operates under the National Shellfish Sanitation Program Guide and enforces strict safeguards from harvest through sale. These include certification of shellfish dealers, verification of approved interstate sources, strict labeling and traceability requirements, and temperature controls designed to maintain food safety and protect public health.
The Food Safety team plays a critical role beyond shellfish oversight, regulating a broad spectrum of food systems including manufacturing, storage, distribution and retail. This comprehensive approach ensures consistent protection for consumers while supporting Tennessee’s agricultural and food industries.
