· More than 100 participants took part in an all-day exercise focused on the TVA Normandy Dam Emergency Plan.
· Completed in 1976, Normandy Dam is TVA’s largest non-power dam located on a Tennessee River tributary.
· The event was held at the Tennessee Fire Service and Codes Enforcement Academy in Bell Buckle.
· In addition to TVA representatives, the participants included the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency and the Coffee County OEM, Bedford County EMA, Marshall County OEM, and Maury County OEM offices; Tennessee Highway Patrol; Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, Marshall County EMS; Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation; Tennessee Department of Health Emergency Preparedness Division; Tennessee DOH division of EMS; Shelbyville Fire and Police Departments; Bedford County Fire; Bedford County EMS; Bedford County Planning, and Finance; Normandy Fire; Duck River Electric; Town of Chapel Hill Mayor and Fire; Henry Horton State Park; National Weather Service-Nashville Office; Southern Tennessee Weather; U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; American Red Cross; and Vanderbilt Medical Center.
· The purpose of the exercise was to assess the effectiveness of emergency action and notification processes during a major dam safety scenario.
· Activities began with an overview of key, fictious events centered around a heavy rainfall situation.
· New information was delivered to the full group or to specific participants throughout the exercise to promote realistic decision-making and collaboration.
· A post-exercise discussion enabled participants to review activities and decisions and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
